Surfing, Biking, Hiking, Gliding: Why the UNLTD Is My Perfect Outdoor Base Camp

Adventure Crew member Moritz Reulein shares his UNLTD highlights

Boards, bikes, a paraglider, an e-motocross bike and photo equipment. Moritz Reulein is a serious outdoor sports enthusiast who doesn’t want to compromise on anything. With our new UNLTD series, he has rediscovered the low-profile motorhome for himself – and brings along three top spots where the UNLTD shows just how great it is as an outdoor basecamp.

My base camp for every adventure Maximum Storage, Maximum Freedom

I don’t just hate compromising on style – I hate leaving my sports gear behind even more. I’m into all kinds of outdoor activities, and I love having the freedom to grab my board, paraglider or bike whenever the mood strikes. The UNLTD makes that easy: there’s room for my electric motocross bike, surfboards, mountain bike, skateboard, paraglider – and even the sonar equipment we occasionally use when we go treasure hunting.

For the two of us, the T 7003S UNLTD was the perfect vehicle. All our gear stays safely tucked away in the rear garage, leaving the huge living area free to make our own. We had a dedicated office space where we could work without constantly having to move things around – which, as a photographer who spends a lot of time editing on the road, is worth its weight in gold. And with the doors wide open, you can sit back and watch your board dry while listening to the waves roll in.

Another feature I’ve really come to appreciate is the separate shower and toilet. As a surfer, I can simply hang my wet wetsuit in the shower while still keeping the bathroom fully accessible.

That’s what the basecamp feeling is all about for me: a vehicle that can keep up with whatever adventure I have in mind. I’ve spent a lot of time on the road with the UNLTD models over the past few months – here are three of my favourite spots:

France Mascaret near Bordeaux: Surfing a Wave That Runs Upstream

Le Mascaret is neither an ocean wave nor a classic river wave. It’s a tidal wave that travels upstream against the current. There are only around 70 places in the world where this phenomenon occurs, with one of the best spots near Saint-Pardon, close to Bordeaux.
You can surf it when the tidal coefficient reaches 95 or higher. The trick is to drift downstream at least half an hour beforehand, wait along the riverbank and, ideally, check one of the dedicated Mascaret calendars in advance to find out exactly when the wave will pass each village.

Italy Sardinia in Winter: A Hidden Gem Away from the Crowds

Spending New Year’s in Sardinia? For most people, it probably wouldn’t be the first choice – and that’s exactly why it’s worth going. Ferry prices are significantly lower than in summer, the water can still reach around 15 to 18°C in December and January, and you’ll often have entire beaches almost to yourself. There’s one thing campers need to keep in mind: many campsites, showers and water points are closed during winter. If you’re travelling self-sufficiently, stock up on water and make use of every open water source you come across, Sardinia is an incredibly rewarding winter escape.

France & Spain Atlantic Coast: September and October Are Pure Gold

For me, September and October are the best months on the Atlantic coast – just when everyone else is heading home in the opposite direction. It’s much quieter, the Bay of Biscay keeps the water warm, the waves are good, and both the locals and the prices feel more relaxed. My tip for travelling in the off-season: the ACSI CampingCard. It gives you access to more than 3,000 campsites across Europe at significantly reduced rates – in some cases, you’ll pay as little as half the usual price.
