Moritz Reulein ger

Surfer, cyclist, freerider, runner, paraglider – Moritz Reulein (@moritz.reulein) channels his pull towards the outdoors into his work as a photographer and filmmaker. Though in his younger days, he funded his trips by selling sausages at the market…

Moritz, how many days or weeks a year are you on the road?

Around 14 weeks, I’d say.

How did the travel bug bite?

Growing up, I was on the alpine ski squad, so I was constantly travelling through the winters. In the summer, my parents would take me to the Atlantic for the whole holiday to surf. And it just never stopped. The goal was to stay on the road for as long as possible on as little money as possible. I’d sell sausages at the market to fund the next trip – off in whatever car could fit a mattress in the back.

But you didn't end up as a butcher, you became a filmmaker and photographer. How did that happen?

I was already filming and shooting a lot back then. Someone had to capture all the action we were getting up to. The fascination was there from the start, and during university the commissions started coming in more and more. So I went straight from graduation into self-employment. Which also suits my freedom-loving nature. I’d hate to be tied to one place, one desk, one task.

You do a lot of work from the camper, too. Does that actually work well?

At home I obviously have a huge monitor, audio gear and all sorts of things I don’t always bring along. But with a small second screen and my 16-inch MacBook, editing works really well. What matters to me is not being cramped with a laptop on my knees, but to be working at a proper table. A decent workspace has become one of the most important things about a camper, as far as I’m concerned.

What else makes the list?

A proper mattress these days, for sure. But the big challenge has always been transporting the mountains of cameras, tripods, lighting cases and so on in an organised way for a job. Even when I’m travelling for myself, I’ve got 3 to 4 crates of film and photo gear with me. Then on top of that come the surfboards, the bike, the paraglider…

Are you more of a planner or a wing-it type?

I tend to go in with a plan, even if not down to the last detail. I know in advance which spots I want to check out, and I look up pitches and campsites in the apps beforehand. When you’re carrying that much equipment, knowing you’re parked somewhere safe just matters.

What are your favourite travel destinations?

The Atlantic coast, South Tyrol and Sardinia. And I’d love to spend a winter on the Canary Islands in the camper someday.

What are the three things that can never be missing from your motorhome?

A small battery-powered espresso machine you can take anywhere. A retractable solar-charged fairy light string, because you always need good vibes when you’re sitting outside the camper in the evening. And Bip&Go, a toll service that lets you pay motorway charges automatically in France, Spain, Italy and Portugal, so you never have to wait at the booths.
