I was already filming and shooting a lot back then. Someone had to capture all the action we were getting up to. The fascination was there from the start, and during university the commissions started coming in more and more. So I went straight from graduation into self-employment. Which also suits my freedom-loving nature. I’d hate to be tied to one place, one desk, one task.
You do a lot of work from the camper, too. Does that actually work well?
At home I obviously have a huge monitor, audio gear and all sorts of things I don’t always bring along. But with a small second screen and my 16-inch MacBook, editing works really well. What matters to me is not being cramped with a laptop on my knees, but to be working at a proper table. A decent workspace has become one of the most important things about a camper, as far as I’m concerned.
What else makes the list?
A proper mattress these days, for sure. But the big challenge has always been transporting the mountains of cameras, tripods, lighting cases and so on in an organised way for a job. Even when I’m travelling for myself, I’ve got 3 to 4 crates of film and photo gear with me. Then on top of that come the surfboards, the bike, the paraglider…
